A Conversation with the Past for the Future is een mobiel monument dat verhalen en informatie uit de Sites of Memory-voorstellingen samenbrengt. Door middel van een sfeervolle installatie van vlaggen en audiofragmenten nodigt het een breed publiek uit om zich te verbinden met gedeelde geschiedenissen en persoonlijke verhalen.
Hier vind je de teksten en audiofragmenten die samen de kunstinstallatie vormen, evenals meer informatie over de portretten die erin worden tentoongesteld.
Als onderdeel van de performance Returning the Gaze die Sites of Memory in 2022 realiseerde, werden 130 portretten op stof gedrukt en tentoongesteld op het Abdijplein in Middelburg. Dit herdenkingsgebaar eerde 130 tot slaaf gemaakte mannen, vrouwen en kinderen uit Angola die daar in 1596 gedwongen moesten staan. Zij waren gevangenen aan boord van het schip van koopman Pieter van der Hagen en kapitein Melchior van den Kerckhoven. Op 18 november werd een kijkdag georganiseerd op het Abdijplein, waarbij zij aan de inwoners van de stad werden getoond. Als gedoopte christenen konden ze in vrijheid leven, maar twee weken later werden ze opnieuw tot slaaf gemaakt door de regering van de Republiek der Nederlanden. Na ruim 6 maanden gevangenschap in Middelburg werden ze weer aan boord genomen en verkocht in West-Indië.
Omdat er geen namen of afbeeldingen van hen bewaard zijn gebleven, worden hun gelijkenissen weergegeven als silhouetten, waardoor ze aanwezigheid en waardigheid krijgen. Achter elk gezicht bevindt zich een lusona, zandtekeningen die door het Chokwe-volk uit Angola als geheugensteuntje worden gebruikt om spreekwoorden, fabels, spelletjes, raadsels en dieren te onthouden en kennis over te dragen. Er worden vijf verschillende lusona gebruikt, namelijk schepping, huwelijk, vriendschap, schildpad en antilope. Geneeskrachtige planten omlijsten de onderkant van elk silhouet.
